jamietobinillustration asked: Hello! I love your illustrations and comic strips so much! I'm an Illustration student from the UK and need to for a module ask a couple of questions to an Illustrator! so can I ask you? I would be eternally grateful! The first question is how did you start promoting your work? and how do you do it now or maintain your audience and, if so publishers etc? Thank you!
Hi Jamie! thanks for this note. About a year and a half ago i wrote this breakdown on how i got the ball rolling on my comics career, but it’s been a while since then so I’ll add some points: I try to maintain a strong but not overbearing presence on social media. I also divide what I post: my main tumblr is for art and announcements, my instagram is more like, process shots or cool things I like that I see about town or traveling… my twitter’s a little wacky and so is my personal blog but otherwise i try to keep things professional. My deadlines for large projects are typically festival dates. I don’t know about in the UK but over here there’s like a large festival somewhere every weekend. I’m traveling to one every weekend in may!! Hmm.. also recently i’ve decided to stop hand-making everything, because it takes up a lot of time and makes the final product too expensive and limited, and I want my books to be affordable and in stores worldwide! Uh, i know i need to be wayyy more organized than I am, but i’m not, so I feel bad giving you advice on that. Oh and here’s a good tip: don’t ever slander anyone on the internet, it’s poor form and it will get back to them. Live cheaply. Drink vodka in a water bottle on the train on the way to the bar, cook your own meals. Answer everyone’s comments or replies to your posts/work, be friendly at events, add all the artists you meet on Facebook, we/they are generally ok with that.
Also, these questions are more about maintaining a comics career;
i totally failed at .. i’m doing a bad job at .. i haven’t really started being an illustrator.
